Over Two Dozen Coal Mines Have Just Closed Down in Spain

As of today, coal mines that receive public funds but do not turn a profit must cease production, according to a European Union directive.
Those uncompetitive mines include 26 ones in Spain, around 14% of whose energy needs are provided by coal. According to a deal with the EU, Spain will also close nine of its current 15 coal-burning plants by 2020 as part of the country’s ongoing efforts to wean itself off fossil fuels in electricity generation.

EPA moves to undo tougher pollution limits on coal plants

 

WASHINGTON –  The Trump administration is moving to rewrite Obama-era rules limiting water pollution from coal-fired power plants.

Scott Pruitt, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, sent a letter announcing his decision to a coalition of energy companies that lobbied against the 2015 water pollution regulations.

Germany Is Converting a Coal Mine Into a Massive Renewable Energy Battery

 

Gemany is turning one of its old coal mines into a giant 'battery station' that will store hydroelectric power and provide energy to around 400,000 homes, with hopes of launching similar facilities across the country in the coming years.

After half a century of service, the Prosper-Haniel hard coal mine in the north-west of the country is due to be shut down in 2018, when the task of getting it converted to a clean energy facility will begin.

House Republicans Vote to End Rule Stopping Coal Mining Debris From Being Dumped in Streams
